I adored both the Peter and Mavin books-can't say enough good things about the Mavin set in particular, as I think Tepper's writing had matured a bit, plus Mavin was such a great character, strong-willed and confident and clever and badass (and yet flawed in ways that realistically mirror her strengths she's no Mary Sue).
